In England, her home, Jacqui Dankworth (the daughter of the well-known English jazz couple Cleo Laine and John Dankworth) is known as the "the most flexible and expressive voice of her generation..." (The Observer) or as "one of our finest singers regardless of category" (The Times). In 2006 Jacqui Dankworth was nominated as 'Best Vocalist' for the BBC Jazz Awards. So far she has four CDs under her belt; the “potential diva“ (The Times) presents a great mix of her own, intriguing songs, jazz standards and the precision of a songwriter, incl. songs by Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt, to name just a few. It is absolutely amazing how easily Dankworth mix jazz with elements of country and rock.
With typical English understatement Jacqui Dankworth does not emphasize her great voice; instead she likes to underplay her astounding abilities. In 2004 The Times said about her CD “Detour Ahead“: ”(she has a) wonderful voice, pure and passionate, capable of octave swoops” and continues with: “The arrangements are subtle and understated, and even if the material isn't quite of a standard to make this a breakthrough album, there's a lot to admire.”
In the past years Dankworth systematically established herself worldwide in quite different contexts as a writer of songs and a singer. She toured recently with the Brodsky Quartet, worked with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Bigband—and delighted her audience in many sold-out jazz clubs.
